INDIVIDUALIZED LEARNING PATHS

At the Crossroads we develop individual learning paths with the end result in mind first. We begin by thinking about the end learning goals for the individual student. What learning will take place as a result of each lesson? Then we design each lesson to align with each learning goal. Finally, we plan instruction and classroom experiences for student learning. The process is as follows:

Step 1-Identify desired results
What should the student know, understand, and be able to do?
What long-term understandings are desired?
It is in this step that we consider our goals and identify the understandings for a lesson of study.

Step 2-Determine acceptable evidence
How will we know that each student has achieved the desired result and met the standard?
What will we accept as evidence of student understanding and proficiency?
This step helps us develop learning activities for the student that is more likely to demonstrate their understanding of the given material.

Step 3-Design learning experiences and instruction
What prerequisite knowledge and skills will the student need in order to perform effectively and achieve the desired results?
Given the long and short-term goals, what needs to be taught?
Is the overall design coherent and effective?
Individual learning paths are then established.
Finally, with clearly defined results and appropriate evidence of understanding in mind, it is now time to plan instructional activities.

Lessons developed for the Learning-2-Learn program correspond additionally with standards set up by The National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP). The National Assessment of Educational Progress is a congressionally mandated project of the United States Department of Education's National Center of Education Statistics. The NAEP has assessed what United States students know and should be able to do in reading, mathematics, and other academic content areas.

Individual student objectives are then identified and correlated to specific NAEP objectives. Teachers can subsequently identify objectives that will help each student not only learn, but master their written short and long-term objectives.

-RESULTS-
(the bottom line)

As a parent, you know that often little choices can make a big difference in the life of your child. Sure, a couple of hours a week doesn't sound like much. But, given the right learning environment, it can make a huge impact.

In fact, the typical Personal Academic Training student in our Reading or Math Program makes one to two years of progress by the first formal Progress Assessment (about six months of instruction).

That level of success isn't just a testament to the quality of our curriculum, but also to the fact that children actually enjoy learning when teaching is done well.
