Where is my Child on the Spectrum?
  ADD/ADHD
  Autism
  Learning Disabilities

Why does ADD/ADHD occur?

Keeping the Neurodevelopment Spectrum in mind we speculate that the following changes in our lifestyle may contribute:

1. Cultural demand has changed the amount of time we parent our children: i.e. we spend less time with our children doing enriching activities, which aids in the development of the nervous system.

2. Maturity expectations have changed. Often we expect more mental acuity at an earlier age, (greater learning of facts & figures) but give less personal responsibilities. So we both expect more and demand less.

3. Attentional systems may be genetically predisposed to develop slower which is further compromised by the SAD (Standard American Diet), excessive television, and computer games.

4. Release of neuro-inhibitors due to environmental health challenges, which delay or interrupt proper development.

At Crossroads Institute we believe that in order to properly assist a child with behavioral challenges it is necessary to carefully examine all aspects of the child's life and neurological development. In this way any other learning or behavioral issues can be addressed.

In turn, we also look to identify the true cause of the behavioral imbalance through complete diagnostic tests. We have found that not all children who are diagnosed with ADD/ ADHD actually have this problem. In some cases it has been seen that some children may be slower at processing due to a neurodevelopmental challenge that translates to slower learning, inattentiveness, and frustration.
